The Dayton's building

There was a news item last night that the St Paul Port Authority will buy
the St Paul Dayton's building for $3e6. My distillation of the reason for
the buy is to prevent the forces of evil from buying the building. I wonder
what they had in mind? The biggest gentleman's club in the world? (It
would fit in nicely with the biggest mall in the world.) A humongous bingo
parlor? I suspect a homeless shelter would be considered a pretty darn good
idea.

They have no real plans, just hold it in inventory, shop it around, maybe
demolish the building.

The whole thing strikes me as being somewhere in the boundary between
ludicrous and preposterous.

They will probably tear it down and build a low-income hi-rise.

There was a prospective buyer from San Francisco; the deal fell through.

City officials feared the buyer was planning on turning it into a
Burlington Coat Factory outlet and space for similar low-end retail
stores. They believe the location means the site has the potential for
something much nicer.

My vote is for demolishing it. It's old, big, dark, and ugly.
Redevelop it into more appealing office space, or mixed
retail/office/housing. Whatever.

I'm impressed with what the Port Authority has accomplished with the
former 3M factory land on the East Side. (And I never thought I'd say
that.) Between that and the demolition of the old pickle/shingle
factory, and the construction of Phalen Boulevard, I believe that
neighborhood has genuine potential to turn around and actually become
desirable over the next several years. So I'm willing to let them take
a shot at redeveloping the Macy's site, too.

You mean a store from a national department store chain, like Macy's?

How about a smelly national thrift store chain like Salvation Army, or Unique? Then they can use the upper floors as a homeless shelter for Saint Paul's largest "downtown resident" category.

Thinking of leaving Minneapolis, are you?
