Discussion:
Need to rent a black suit for funeral.

Title says it all
I need to rent a black suit for both and adult and a 9-year old to attend a
funeral
Have no need or desire to buy one
Do the rental places that rent formal wear do this ?
Do you know of any that do this ?
Thanks
Clothes are (relatively) so cheap in this modern
world that I seriously doubt that anyone could
stay in business renting suits suitable for funerals.

I don't think that the deceased will notice what
you're wearing. However, funerals are for the
living. If you don't feel the need to "impress" or
"fit in with" the living by wearing a suit during your
normal life activities, why try now?

Showing up is what really matters.

This advice comes to you from a person whose
mother died two weeks ago.

Why do you need a suite for a funeral. There is no need for formal dress for
the vast majority of funerals that I have been too, although casual dress is
usually frowned upon. This may sound insensitive, but the dead person will
not care what you wear, and if looking down from his/her resting place will
just be happy that you are there. I tried to keep this as "secular" as
possible to avoid drawing out the left wing attackes on political correctness.

At least you avoided your captious behavior in your other post where you
noted that I was using the word suite rather than suit (and if you want to
know why I do it, it is because I write software and one of the software
products we work with is **** Suite), and also, thanks for missing my
mispelling of "attacks" so that I could note it myself.

As far as keeping it secular and PC, it avoids, hopefully, the attacks of he
who shall not be named and a long chain of responses that forces me to kill an
entire thread, which I dislike doing.

Simple, if he thinks he needs to wear one and actually doesn't then it could
save him some money. That is all I and a couple of others have said.

I know you don't want buying info, but I've seen nice looking suit pieces
now being sold at some Target stores in the menswear dept. I haven't
checked prices, but it might be a cheaper option than renting. Just
something to keep in mind....
Good luck finding somebody who can properly fit you into a suite at Target ...
or JC Penny's or Kohls. If you want to buy a suite, you really have to go to
a place that specializes in such things and Men's Warehouse is the first thing
that comes to mind for me. However, I don't recommend buying or renting a
suite for a funeral for most cases. I suppose if you are a Pallbearer that
may change things some, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

LOL
YOu prove that indeed you DO need a dictionary
1) You wrote "suite"
2) Guys is a generic that under English rules of grammar encompasses both
males and females
For example, the word "actor" is also used in such a fashion
3) I have no way of knowing what your flavor of gender may be from your
posting

He's probably counting the quoted text from Thomas that appeared in your
reply, and doesn't even realize that this makes him equally guilty of the
very same thing by requoting the previously quoted material. So, unless he
includes himself in his complaint, there's no merit in his trying to pin it
on you as well as Thomas. He just wants to lash out at people here, so he's
not worth any further time of yours or mine.

True enough, but since the OP just wants a suit for this one occasion, I'm
assuming one that fits reasonably well without be custom tailored to fit
would do just fine.

This advice comes to you from a person whose

Exactly. I recently attended a funeral for a friend and I wore
an off-the-shelf black sport coat with a black button down
shirt and a pair of jeans. Comfortable, appropriately somber,
and I seemed to fit in just fine.

As Levi said, it's the being there and supporting family and
friends of the deceased that counts.

Oh, and by the way, sorry to hear about your mother. :-(

Thank you Scott. She was 92 and ready to go,
so her passing should be observed more with
joy than with sorrow. All of her children and
most of her grandchildren were there to help
ease her final days.

Many people in the family may feel you are being disrespectful if you
show up dressed inappropriately.

Despite it being labeled "tuxedos" there are suits. So I suspect that
other rental places will also rent suits.

Yes it is. However, in order to keep the
wheels of society properly greased, quite
often we do things like don the "appropriate
costume" of the group we are (by circumstance
or choice) trying to pass amongst without
undue friction.

Very true. Although, I have managed for most of my life to avoid
having to deal with those particular constraints very often.

How about ask the funeral home what the deceased will be wearing, and
try to dress similarly.

I know you don't want buying info, but I've seen nice looking suit pieces
now being sold at some Target stores in the menswear dept. I haven't
checked prices, but it might be a cheaper option than renting. Just
something to keep in mind....

Good point. Tuxedo rentals can be expensive; I don't know about plain
dark suits.

Men's Wearhouse rents suits for kids
Suit/shirt/tie/shoes for $60 for my 9 year-old
Far better than buying a suit he'll outgrow.
For myself, I resurected an old navy pinstripe from the back of the closet
Tailoring to fit after 13 years, $55
Problem solved
Ironically, since I'm not as physically active, I have actually lost some
bulk, so it's more about tightening rather than loosening the jacket and
pants for a better fit.
Who would have thunk it ?

You have my sympathy.
Have no need or desire to buy one
Do the rental places that rent formal wear do this ?
Yes, they do.
Do you know of any that do this ?
Call the closest place to you. Try a Yellow pages search or a local
area search for Tuxedo Rentals, Mens Formal Wear, Large malls may have
such businesses‹check the tenant directory of the one nearest you.

Good luck.

yes that can work very well. since garage sales are now non existant
in this weather. The problem is running all over, north, south, east
and west, to the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores that are near
upscale nighborhoods, that get the upscale suits in normal sizes, and
still have them in inventory. The doggone volunteers and employees
tend to take them home to their spouses, sons and relatives.

Are you willing to spend the money on a good tailor? Otherwise, JC
Penney Clearance or Mens Warehouse cheapest, seems like your best
option. Or, can you .borrow one from one of your church friends, of
the same size.

Buy yourself a navy blue sports jacket, and some dark gray slacks.

You can use that same outfit for many other semi formal occasions.

In the spring, by some tan slacks, and you can wear it to a wedding,
too.

Everybody should have one suit jacket.

Buy yourself a navy blue sports jacket, and some dark gray slacks.
Blazer and slacks matching or dark grey have always been my default for
formal events.
In this case, it has to be a bit more formal than blazer and slacks.

Meaanwhile, I've solved the problem by resurecting an old "mafia", aka dark
(nearly black) blue pinstripe for the occasion for myself and renting a suit
for my son.

My condolences for your loss
I hope she was able to enjoy her life for as long as possible

My mom passed a week ago at 89. Metastased breast cancer took her from 140#
to 64# within a year. Fortunately with very little discomfort or pain.

We had to move her to a hospice in June, since she had needed help to live
in her appartment for the last year, and we had reached the point where the
hospice was easier. (The daughter of parent's family friend ran the show for
us - since she lived in Montreal)

She had visitors, her minister and 2 friends leave just 10 minutes before
she passed away.

I've been shuttling wtih one of my kids at least once a month for the last
couple of years, to let them have as much "grandma time" as possible.
They've accumulated so many miles that they get automatic upgrades to First
Class whenever they fly and there's a seat available..

Agreed, that funerals are for those left behind and not for the dead.
The people who will come to it live in an environment that is still a lot
more formal than Minnesota is.
Since I'm the one organizing it, I have to be dressed for the occasion. And
my usual jeans and polo shirt just won't do for the occasion.

I know this was a long time ago but for the love of all that is holy, we as a people REALLY need to stop doing this! Whether your loved one recently died or not, the fact is that the original poster asked whether or not there were stores that rented suits. They did NOT ask your opinion on wearing suits at funerals! If you are incapable of answering the question (which clearly you were not since you NEVER answered the original question) then do not waste our time pontificating on your view of funeral attire! It's not only annoying but disrespectful and self centered.
