I'm trying to locate the access to my septic tank.

I know where the tank itself is, since there's an above-ground
vent. However, I'm not sure where to find the access.

Does anybody here have an experience with this? General hints are
what I'm looking for. Things like:
1. Will the access be between the house and the vent, or will
the access be "downstream" from the vent?
2. How close are they likely to be? Should I be looking within
a foot of the vent? Should I be looking five feet away?

I've been probing around with a piece of metal, but I'm striking
more roots than anything else. Any tips to help me narrow my search
would be appreciated.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him talk like Mr. Ed
by rubbing peanut butter on his gums.

Well, thanks for the suggestion, but it turned out to be much closer.

You found it? Nice going! You know, you're supposed to get those pumped
out once a year... :P

It depends upon the size of the tank and the number of people it serves.
My tank is 1,000 gallons, and I'm single. Everything I've found agrees
that once a decade is often enough.

Oh! So you just forgot where the access was in the decade since you
last had it pumped? ;)
